Over/Under Charts Explained

Or/Under Charts compare the difference between each driver's actual finishing position and their Expected Finish Position (this viz is better viewed on Tableau's website).

The chart is a plot of actual finish on the y-axis and Expected Finish on the x-axis. Each car is plotted on the chart with an icon of their car number. The diagonal line separates the over performers and the under performers. Any points above the line under-performed because their actual finish was higher than the Expected Finish. That means anyone who is below the line is over-performing and finished better then they were expected to. The filter on the right side can isolate a drivers, teams, tracks, and more. Hovering your cursor over a data point will display more information.

Tips

~ Any data points that lay on the line means they finished how they should have. As it turns out, very few drivers actually end up finishing where they should have. It shows the unpredictability of the races and the value of the Expected Finish Position stat for drivers who have issues.

~ Looking from the top down, you see the finishing results of each car with the top of the chart being the worst, and looking from left to right, you see the Expected Finish, with the right being the worse. Drivers want to be lower, and when they end up on the bottom-left that means they dominated the race and won.

~ Some drivers had problems and had really bad finishes, but the viz shows where they should have finished if you look at the cars from the left to the right. This way you can see who could have battled for the win if they didn't have troubles
